Join the demonstration to save Brixton Market on Wednesday 13 October, from 5.30-7pm.
Lambeth Council and Tesco have decided to rebuild Streatham’s ice rink on the site of the Pope’s Road car park by the market which will mean that there is virtually no parking left for people who want to shop there. Brixton’s historic multicultural market is already dying because of a lack of parking, and building an ice rink on the site of the only car park in the area will kill it once and for all.
A report to Mayor Boris Johnson has stated that street markets like Brixton’s are hugely important for less well-off Londoners and help to increase their standard of living. Street markets are also more important for the aged and for people of BME heritage than anyone else. The destruction of Brixton Market by Lambeth Council and Tesco will further deprive people who are already excluded and disadvantaged.
The demonstration will be taking place on Acre Lane outside Tesco. Please come along to show Lambeth Council and Tesco exactly what we think!
Dear Sir/Madam,
I,m project manager for Brixton based not for profit company Embrace Cooperation Ltd (www.myembrace.org). We are working on developing a funding application for a community project with Lambeth Council & Friends of Ruskin Park. We are looking to consult and gain support from local community organisations and local people. Therefore I’m contacting you.
Embrace Cooperation Ltd Ruskin Park project proposal
Our proposal is to apply for Heritage Lottery funding for Embrace Cooperation Ltd to run a 1 year history / nature conservation project focusing on Ruskin Park.
The project will run 10 public events 1 per month (apart from first & last month of project) which will include nature ID walks, nature photography walks, practical nature conservation events and history walks (if we can find suitable people to lead the history walks).
We will also offer free environmental education activities to schools, community groups & youth groups (up to 1 per month).
Project volunteers will (with the help of project staff & equipment) create a oral history film about the history park between 10 to 15 minutes long, interviewing long term residents about their memories of the park and also researching the history of the park both online and at local libraries / Lambeth archive (Minet Library).
The film will made into DVD’s then given to local libraries, schools, community groups (including Friends of Ruskin Park) and project volunteers. The film will also be put on YouTube and can also be put on a project website & Friends of Ruskin Park website.
A small booklet will be made by project volunteers (with the help of project staff & equipment) with brief history of the park, information about the park facilities, nature / wildlife and a map of the park. Which will be either given away for free or at cost price (once the budget for producing the booklet has run out).
A sign will be designed about the history of John Ruskin (famous artist, writer and social campaigner, who lived nearby from 1823 to 1871 who the park is named after) by volunteers and made by professional sign makers. The sign will not be made until we have approval from Lambeth Council & Friends of Ruskin Park regarding the design / wording. Also the position of the placement of the sign will be decided by Lambeth Council & Friends of Ruskin Park.
Embrace Cooperation Ltd will be the lead partner and run / administer the project. But we are consulting with both Lambeth Council & Friends of Ruskin Park regarding project events in the park and the wording / design of the sign.
Time frame wise we would be looking to aim to get funding for February 2011 to start the project.
If Loughborough Junction Blog can help us in anyway to consult with local people or support the application with a short letter we would be grateful. Please contact me if you can any questions or would like to meet to discuss this proposed project.
Kind Regards
John

A new independent coffee shop has opened just next door to Loughborough Junction Station. We are called beanery and specialise in high quality coffee, artisan pastries, and very yummie sandwiches. The Cafe is ‘absolutely fantastic’, ‘totally needed’, ‘shockingly different to the area because so far there were only ‘greasy-spoon coffee shops’ around here’ (these are just a few comments that we have so far received from our growing customer base). Come and check us out. We would love to speak to everyone interested in making Loughborough Junction into the arty, inspiring, quirky environment it is meant to be!

Some of you may have seen the recent activity in the wood next to Sainsburys on Dog Kennel Hill. This is the result of a cleaner, greener, safer initiative by a local residents group.
The work is now nearly completed and the council are having an open day on Saturday 2nd April from 12 til 2pm.
Come and join the “Friends of DKH Wood”, go on a bug hunt, follow a nature trail and generally see what’s been going on in the wood.
The friends of DKH Wood have recently formed in order to promote the wildlife in the wood and prevent it from any adverse development. We need members who also want to preserve this rare bit of woodland. Come and meet us on Saturday.
Embrace Cooperation Ltd had received funding from Heritage Lottery fund to run a community project focusing on Ruskin Park.
Overview of project:
This year project will start October 2011, focusing on the historical and natural heritage of Ruskin Park in Lambeth, South London. This will include heritage of English historical figure John Ruskin who was a famous artist, writer and social campaigner. John Ruskin lived nearby from 1823 to 1871 and the park is named after him.
This project is participant led (long term volunteers and short-term participants). Our initial research has highlighted many potential research areas which will be shown to project participants. Under Embrace project staff guidance and with the involvement of project partners (i.e. Lambeth Archives) the project participants will be narrow down the project focus to concentrate on specific areas of interest.
